‘Avatar’ Takes Box Office Top Spot From Endgame
Avatar has once again taken the Box office crown from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ this weekend. After being re-released in China, Cameron’s sci-fi epic surpassed ‘$2.802 Billion’ at the box office. Shooting past ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to the top of the box office charts.
The directors of “Endgame,” Joe and Anthony Russo, took to social media to congratulate Cameron. “Passing the gauntlet back to you,” they wrote in the post.
Originally part of the rereleases preapproved by China’s Film Bureau in 2020, the 2009 sci-fi epic has remained on ice during 2020.
“We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theatres during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support,” said producer Jon Landau. “We are hard at work on the next Avatar films and look forward to sharing the continuation of this epic story for years to come.”

Avatar’s new box office success comes just in time with renewed interest in the franchise due to the Avatar sequel that is slated for release in 2022. It will be one of five sequels coming in the next decade. Disney only recently acquired “Avatar” in 2019, meaning that currently, Disney owns the top five highest-grossing films of all time and eight of the top ten. Notably, “Titanic,” which currently sits in third was a joint production between Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox. The other films are “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” 2019′s live-action remake of “The Lion King,” “Avengers” and “Frozen II.”
Speaking to China.org on Thursday, Cameron said. “We’ve got climate change, we’ve got deforestation, our relationship with nature is more at risk than it’s ever been. Avatar is about those things, but it also is a timeless film.”
“Some people criticize the stories for being too simple. It wasn’t that simple — it was universal. It was something that everybody everywhere could understand and emotionally related to.”
However, it is worth noting that Avatar has had several re-releases over the last decade. Whereas ‘Avengers: Endgame’ made most of its money in 2019.
